UMKC Charter School Center
Vision
As part of UMKC’s vision of active engagement with its city and region and its mission to collaborate in urban issues and education the UMKC Charter School Center was created to:
- Establish and assist in the development of high quality urban schools that will retain and attract families with school-age children within the Kansas City Missouri School District.
- Sponsor charter schools which address safe and orderly climates, high attendance, increased parent involvement, high academic achievement, and effective governance practices to ensure this is the norm for all students regardless of economic standing, race, culture, or gender.
- In exchange for greater autonomy, the charter schools sponsored by UMKC are more accountable for student achievement, fiscal responsible, and legal compliance.
- Provide schools of choice for parents and students which could encourage more effective practices and collaboration throughout the Kansas City School District.
Goals
- To empower urban youth to attain their full potential resulting in a city, state, and nation that can compete in a global economy, this will be accomplished by holding charter schools accountable for achieving MAP Index scores in most subjects and grade levels that are above the state average.
- To retain families of school age children in the core of Kansas City, MO who normally would matriculate from the school district after completing elementary school. This will be accomplished by providing small, safe, and academically challenging high schools.
- To address the needs of Kansas City’s high-risk, underserved youth by providing them options to enroll, or re-enroll, in underutilized and expanded alternative schools that are designed specifically to meet their needs.
- To provide additional educational choices to students and families in urban Kansas City, MO by filling voids in public school educational offerings.
