Read questions/response options prior to reading passage

MODEL reading questions/response options prior to reading a passage (can be done with guided instruction, whole group or conferencing)

Reread question and response prior to moving to next question…does it make sense?

MODEL rereading question and response prior to moving to next question.

Use a variety of graphic organizers for information and writing

Teach a variety of graphic organizers and allow students to determine which one is most appropriate for a given task

Use all parts of text including the passage, illustrations, charts, captions

Teach significance of all parts of a text including passage, illustration, charts, captions

Use text-based details to support a response from different parts of a passage

MODEL and expect students to pull text-based details from different parts of a passage

Avoid using pronouns in response

MODEL and expect students to identify the noun in their response

Check your response against a scoring guide

Use a 2 pt. scoring guide with daily constructed response questions in any content area

Always be thoughtful about who your audience is when responding…it doesn’t have to be the classroom teacher

Always identify who the intended audience is when reading or writing with students…who do you think the author is writing to?  (can be done with guided instruction, whole group or conferencing)

Use legible handwriting

Expect legible handwriting on all assignments

Use Magic Rub erasers

Require Magic Rub erasers on school supply list
