Teacher Education Application

The Teacher Education (TE) Professional Program is the final 1-2 years of a student’s teacher certification program. Students who have been admitted to UMKC as a pre-education major and have completed all general education, pre-professional, and subject-area coursework are ready to apply to the TE Professional Program. If these requirements are uncertain and/or unmet, applicants will need check their advising worksheet, PlanMyDegree audit, or meet with an academic advisor prior to applying.

 

How do I know if I’m ready to apply for admission to the professional program?

  • Have you completed all general education, pre-professional, and required content courses for your degree program?
  • Have you earned a C or better in all of your pre-professional and/or content area courses?
  • Have you met all of the pre-professional requirements listed in your PlanMyDegree report, or reviewed with your academic advisor? Those if you with programs in transition may be working from a DESE document after meeting with your academic advisor.
  • Do you meet or exceed the current GPA requirements?
    • Achieve a minimum cumulative college Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.75 (4.0 scale). Faculty are looking for a 3.0 but students with a 2.75-2.99 will still be considered for admission.
    • Achieve a minimum content GPA of a 3.00 or higher (for Middle, Secondary, and K-12 candidates).
  • Do you feel prepared to successfully pass the Missouri General Education Assessment and/or Missouri Content Assessment?

Teacher Education Admission Process (Summer 2017 & Fall 2017 admission)

  1. Step One – Submit the Teacher Education Intent Form on or before Friday, December 9, 2016 by 5:00 pm. This intent form is to notify faculty and Student Services which students plan to submit their full application materials in March. You do not need to submit anything else along with the online intent form.  After you complete this form you will receive an e-mail via your UMKC email address with further instructions.
  2. Step Two – Complete the formal application process.  Prepare your application materials and submit all documents via email to education@umkc.edu on or before Wednesday, March 1, 2017 by 5:00 pm.

 

What do I need to include in my Teacher Education Application packet?

  1. Degree audit PDF
  2. Passing MoGEA score report PDF
  3. Passing Missouri Content exam PDF
    • Middle/Secondary/K12 majors only: Develop a plan to pass the Missouri Content Assessment (MoCA). (If you are seeking K12 Foreign Language, Elementary, or Early Childhood Fall 2017 admission, you do not need to take the MoCA prior to admission. If you have questions or need clarification, please contact your academic advisor.
    • The MoCA should be taken no later than January 28, 2017, if it is required for your degree program.
  4. Missouri Educator Profile report PDF
  5. TWO reference forms completed by a professional reference (UMKC faculty members preferred) Download reference form here

    • Ask your mentors and professors well ahead of time, if you can use them as a reference.
    • Use the reference form, here.
    • Your references should email the completed forms to education@umkc.edu by March 1, 2016.
  6. PDF copy of your Cover Letter & Resume

    • Write a Cover Letter and Resume as if you were applying to work at a School District (click here for instructions). Your resume should include paid and/or volunteer work experiences, student organizations, experiences working in schools or with children, etc. Electronically post your resume and cover letter on the Roo Career Network (you will receive feedback from Career Services via email). Your Career Services approved resume and cover letter should be converted to PDF and emailed to education@umkc.edu along with your other Teacher Education application materials, listed above.

 

When do I need to submit all items listed above?

  • All materials below should be submitted via email to education@umkc.edu on or before March 1, 2017 by 5:00 pm.
  • Your email subject title should read: “Teacher Education Application” EntryTerm FirstName LastName StudentID (either Summer 2017 or Fall 2017)
    • Ex. Teacher Education Application Fall 2017 – Kasey Roo 123456 
  • The email message body does not need to contain any information except for your application attachments.
  • All documents should be attached to ONE single email. (Do not send separate emails for each document, unless a document is too large to send in one email.)
  • All attachments should be in PDF format.
