PhD in Counseling Psychology Application Procedures
Applicants are to be aware of the criteria and selection process for PhD candidates prior to beginning and submitting application materials.
Application materials must be submitted to two separate offices on campus:
1) The UMKC Admissions Office, AND
2) The Division of Counseling and Educational Psychology Office
1) Materials to be sent to the UMKC Admissions Office:
- UMKC Application for Admission Form and Fee Payment Note: Print or copy application prior to submitting online or mailing
- Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions previously attended (in sealed envelope or sent directly from each institution)
- Official Graduate Record Exam (GRE), including GRE writing scores, sent directly from ETS
Application Packet to be sent to the Division of Counseling and Educational Psychology Office:
- Cover Sheet for the Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology
- Copy of UMKC Application for Admission
- Personal statement
A concise (two to three page) statement concerning some or all of your:
- self reflection/perception
- professional goals and interests
- research knowledge, experience, and interest
- views on multiculturalism and diversity
- Curriculum vita containing:
- contact information; educational background; relevant clinical, research, and volunteer experiences; honors/awards; membership/leadership in professional organizations; presentations and publications
- Three (3) letters of recommendation with rating sheets attached (Directions below)
Letters should address applicant's:
- suitability for professional studies in a mental health service profession
- interpersonal and intellectual functioning and skills in research, counseling, and written and oral communication
*Directions: References must be from professional or academic settings. Letters and rating sheets must be in a sealed envelope with reference's signature across back flap. All envelopes to be collected by applicant and submitted with application packet.
Please note that admission to UMKC or the School of Graduate Studies does not guarantee admission to the Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology program.
