I am pleased to report that the campus-wide Hiring Authorization Committee has approved two faculty positions in ELPF and we have established search committees.  Dr. Marie McCarther will chair the committee for a Teaching Assistant Professor in Instructional Design and Technology.  Assisting her will be Drs. Jennifer Friend and Micheal Strohschein, along with Mr. Mark Maxwell and Ms. Molly Mead (instructional designer, eLearning, for UMKC’s Information Access).  Dr. Michelle Maher will chair the search committee for a tenure track Assistant/Associate Professor in Higher Education Administration, serving with Drs. Donna Davis, Jake Marszalek, Nancy Murdock and Jennifer Waddell.

 

My congratulations to Drs. Donna Davis and Marie McCarther who presented this week at the Women in Educational Leadership Conference in Lincoln, Nebraska.  Their presentation is: Kansas City Dreamkeepers: Visions and Voices for the Future—Providing Safe Spaces for Culturally Relevant Pedagogy and Student Voice.

 

A program on stories of immigration was held in the SOE Learning Commons last Tuesday in conjunction with UMKC’s annual Social Justice Book and Lecture Series.  A gallery walk of videos and posters was displayed of high school students’ personal narratives of immigrating to the U.S and musical entertainment was provided by Trio Aztlan, featuring our own Dr. Uzziel Pecina!  Participants then viewed the documentary, “I Learn America” which was followed by a panel who shared their challenges and triumphs of immigrating to Kansas City.  The event was co-hosted by the Division of Diversity and Inclusion.

 

Please join us next Tuesday, October 18, for a presentation by Ted Stahl (from 12-1 in room 307) to learn about your benefit options and what has changed from this year.  Lunch will be provided so please RSVP.  Know that you must make your benefits selections by October 28.

 

A reminder that Mikah Thompson and Kevin Sansberry will be here October 28 (from 12-2 in room 307) for search committee training. Please RSVP.  A light lunch will be provided from 11:30 a.m. – noon.  Faculty/staff who are unable to attend the October 28 training will be asked to make arrangements to complete the training through HR before serving on a search committee.

 

The UMKC Campus Climate Survey is now available, with the deadline for replying November 4.  I encourage all faculty and staff to complete the survey to provide your thoughts about the level of fairness, inclusion and respect on campus.  Each academic unit must have a 30% response rate for each population category (students, faculty, staff) in order to receive school specific data.

 

And, a final reminder for those of you planning to attend the AACTE meeting in Tampa in March that discounted registration rates are available through October 19.
