This year’s deadline for UMKC and System-wide faculty/staff awards is November 1st and I urge you to nominate fellow SOE colleagues who are deserving of recognition. Further information and nomination forms visit http://info.umkc.edu/awards/umkc-campus-awards/.
I am pleased to announce that five faculty positions have been approved, beginning in Fall 2015. Three positions will be posted in CIL: Assistant/Associate Professor Urban Teacher Education/English Language Arts, Assistant/Associate Professor Urban Teacher Education/Language and Literacy, and Assistant/Associate Professor Urban Teacher Education/Early Childhood. Dr. Rita Barger will chair the search committee for these three positions, assisted by Drs. Julia Atiles, Etta Hollins, Patty McHatton, Kindel Nash and Jennifer Waddell. Two positions will be posted for ELPF: Associate/Full Professor of PK-12 Educational Administration and Division Chair, Associate/Full Professor Higher Education Administration. The search committee for these two positions has not yet been formed. Additionally, we received approval for the Director of Continuing and Professional Education, to replace Dr. Robert Leachman who will be leaving the School at the end of December. The search committee for this position also has not yet been named.
As it appears that we failed to earlier recognize members of the search committee for the position of Senior Student Support Specialist in Continuing and Professional Education, let me now thank Drs. Robert Leachman (chair) and Patty Alvarez McHatton, Ms. Christine Timmerman, Ms. Barbara Schaaf Petty and Ms. Vicki Panethiere for their due diligence and efforts.
The inaugural meeting of the Future Teachers Organization was held on Wednesday, October 15th. Ten students and staff participated in an engaging discussion of ideas for establishing this new group. Some suggestions included hosting panels of speakers to address the needs and questions of our pre-education and teacher education students, such as a panel of juniors sharing their experience with going through the teacher education application process, a panel of current student teachers who can talk about their experiences in the classroom, and a panel of school principals who can address what they look for when hiring teacher candidates. Other ideas included engaging in a community service project in conjunction with SOE Student Government and hosting a screening of a new film about teachers titled TEACH. The group plans to meet again soon to start planning, writing a constitution and selecting officers. For more information, contact Ms. Christine Timmerman at email@example.com.
We had a good turnout last Friday for the presentation by HR on the important changes to the University’s medical plans. Please remember that you must make a selection during annual enrollment, beginning today, through October 31st.
I hope you will join the UERC at its open house in its new location in room 245 this Wednesday, October 22nd, from 4-6 p.m. Faculty, staff, students and the public are welcome.
And, a repeat reminder that November 3rd is the deadline for Graduate Assistance Fund applications.
