Wow, where has this semester gone? Next week will be our last issue of enews until after the holidays when we will resume on January 12th. And, please be mindful of the 5:00 p.m. deadline on Tuesday, December 23rd, for turning in this semester’s grades before you head off for a deserving break.

Because we need to provide an accurate headcount, today is the absolute last day to RSVP (password: grandstreet) to join colleagues at our year-end Strategic Action Plan Update and Celebration. We will gather Friday, December 12th from 12-2 p.m. at Grand Street Café for the update and a holiday meal, and I hope to see many of you there.

My many thanks to those of you who helped provide holiday toys/gifts for foster children in the community. The giving nature of our faculty and staff is amazing! We are 18 gifts shy of our goal of 75, so if you have not yet dropped your wrapped gift(s) off in the dean’s suite, please do so today. And, please express your thanks to the Culture and Climate Committee for coordinating this project for us.

With mid-year graduation right around the corner, I would like to thank Drs. Julia Atiles, Rita Barger, Carolyn Barber, Bonita Butner, Loyce Caruthers, Nancy Murdock, Johanna Nilsson, Dianne Smith and Uzziel Pecina, as well as Ms. Christine Timmerman and Mr. Conner Warner for agreeing to help recognize, hood and cheer our graduates. We have 61 students graduating with fall degrees and to date are expecting 33 of them to walk. Questions on your participation should be directed to Ms. Gail Metcalf Schartel.

I am pleased to report that two SOE alums and one current student (Cameron Ferrell) now grace three bulletin boards across the metro, piggybacking off a UMKC wide billboard campaign that ran in the fall. Our billboard campaign will run for three months, with rotation of art work in two locations after 1-1/2 months. The intent is to raise general awareness of the School of Education in the community and pique interest of transfer and freshman students. Billboards are located at I435 northbound at 23rd Street, 71 Highway southbound at 52nd Street and I35 south bound at 127th Street.

Given Dr. Bonita Butner’s impending retirement at the end of the month, I wish to express my gratitude to her for her selfless service to UMKC and the School of Education. She joined what was ULAPSIE (now ELPF) in 2005, and named division chair in 2011. She served as program chair for the higher education program at the same time, but became a key player in helping the PK-12 administration group as well.   She has been an even-keeled, “practical academic” and her wisdom, insights and mentoring will be truly missed. We wish you great enjoyment in the years ahead, Bonita! Similarly, we extend our best wishes for new adventures as Dr. Rob Leachman will be leaving the Continuing and Professional Education division, after leading our Northland location for many years, at the end of the year as well. If you were unable to join us at Rob’s retirement celebration last week, please make sure to extend to him your thanks and congratulations for his contributions and commitment to our students.

For those of you planning to attend the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Association of Teacher Educators in Phoenix in February, please note that Dr. Etta Hollins will be the Research Speaker! Her current professional activities include Vice President for Division K—Teaching and Teacher Education for the American Educational Research Association and founding member of the NCATE/CAEP Transformation Initiatives Committee.

Make it a great week!
