Census date for spring 2017 was February 13 and, as expected, we have double digit declines in both undergraduate and graduate head count and credit hour. This semester we have 301 undergraduates (-10.97% from last spring) and 410 graduates (-25.85% from last spring) for a total of 5,667 credit hours (-19.04%). Many efforts are underway to reverse this trend, including conversations about graduate recruitment with colleagues across campus and the establishment of our own internal Graduate Enrollment Management Committee. We will keep you posted.
As some of you may know, UMKC Admissions will host two “Experience UMKC” events on Friday, March 10, and Friday, April 7. These events are geared toward admitted freshmen and transfer students, and the School of Education will have a dedicated portion of the day (9:45-11 a.m.) to engage with students in our building before the students have lunch and attend university-wide sessions. Campus visits are the #1 driver in the college-choice decision process so faculty attendance and interaction with these students is highly encouraged. For SOE faculty who are available and willing to help with any of the following activities, please email Ms. Jessica Gomes directly:
9:30 – 9:50 a.m. – Meet and Greet students and family members
9:50 – 10:05 a.m. – Breakout sessions with faculty
10:30 – 11:00 a.m. – Assist Dr. Uzziel Pecina with a “Being a Teacher” session
A reminder that the UMKC Alumni Association and the campus celebrate the outstanding achievements of UMKC graduates every year through the Alumni Awards luncheon. Nominations for the Class of 2018 honorees are open through March 5 with a complete list of the award criteria and application process found online. You may submit a nomination on your own or provide a suggestion to our alumni officer, Tamara Morris.
This year’s Urban Education and Community Forum is only six weeks away! Dr. Alfred Tatum of the University of Illinois at Chicago will address “What it takes for effective urban education: Advancing the Literacy Development of African American Boys.” Register now for the April 3rd event, which runs from 5-6:30 p.m. in the UMKC Student Union (Room 401). Doors open and seating is encouraged beginning at 4:30 p.m.
