Census data is in! UMKC’s total overall headcount enrollment is at 14,820 students, representing an 8.73% decrease from last spring’s headcount enrollment. These students are enrolled in 164,220.5 credit hours, representing a 5.22% decrease. As for the School of Education, we have a spring headcount of 891 students (a 13.74% decrease from last year); 338 undergraduates (13.33% decline) and 553 graduates (13.99% decline). We are only one of two academic units with double digit decreases from spring 2015 to this year. With regard to student credit hours, we are down 12.23% (7,000 credit hours) overall; down 10.72% for undergraduates and down 12.45% for graduates. We are the only unit on campus with student credit hour declines for both undergraduate and graduate students. Needless to say, these numbers are troubling and I ask for everyone’s due diligence and thoughtful consideration when providing, collectively as divisions, to the Provost the information she has requested on programs you believe have the best opportunities for growth within the next few years.
I am pleased to share that UMKC’s 2016 Women’s Council Graduate Assistance Fund (GAF) recipients have been named, and I know you will help me in congratulating the SOE students who will be awarded nearly $14,000 to help sustain and validate their work in our local, national and global communities. The GAF Committee reviewed 86 applications and will award more than $96,000 to 73 students across campus. Our SOE students to be honored at the GAF Luncheon on March 24th are all IPh.D. candidates in Counseling Psychology: Sara Aslan, Shavern Browne, Jenna Brownfield, Wen Wen Chong, Malindi Gowen, Sathya Jeevanba, Richa Khanna (with outstanding merit), Joanna Maung, Monica Oh, Jessica Ross, Jennifer Schaafsma and Christine Serpe. I also wish to commend Drs. Carolyn Barber, LaVerne Berkel, Julie Kohlhart, Kimberly Langrehr, Jacob Marszalek, Nancy Murdock, Johanna Nilsson, Heather Noble and Laurel Watson who wrote faculty recommendations.
A reminder of the faculty/staff professional development opportunity on March 18th. Ms. Melissa Messina, instructional designer for UMKC Online will discuss (online) course accessibility with us. The information will be useful whether you teach entire courses online, simply use Blackboard to support your face-to-face class, or if you do not teach at all! Join us for what promises to be an enlightening discussion and presentation. Lunch will begin at noon in 307 with the presentation at 12:30 in room 34. Please RSVP.
And, please remember that tomorrow is the deadline for undergraduate and graduate SOE students to submit scholarship applications for the 2016-17 academic year, and the nomination deadline for UMKC’s 2017 Alumni Achievement Awards is March 7th.
Enjoy the weather while it lasts—and your week!
