Last week, several SOE faculty and staff attended the dedication and ribbon cutting for the Berkley Center’s new preschool playground. What a joyous occasion to see the excitement in the children as they showed their parents the new playground and the activities underway in their classrooms. Joining Ms. Polly Prendergast and me for the actual ribbon cutting were Charles Sosland, Oppenstein Brothers Foundation disbursement committee and UMKC Foundation board member; Beth Radtke, Commerce Bank foundation office director; Steven Norris, UMKC Foundation president; and Kelley Schneiders, Berkley Family Involvement Program president. My thanks to all the staff at Berkley and Ms. Rachael Steele who planned and executed a very successful and fun event!
To correct a comment I made in last week’s enews, our search committee members for the one-year instructor in Language and Literacy are Drs. Rita Barger (chair), Kindel Nash, Jennifer Waddell and Connor Warner. My thanks to all of them for their thoughtful dedication to this task.
Summer Session numbers released last week show that enrollment this year across campus, as compared to the first day of Summer Session in 2014, is up 1.2% in headcount and .98% in credit hours. Unfortunately, the SOE’s enrollment numbers confirm a drop in headcount of 8.54% (58 students) and a drop in credit hours of nearly 12% (424 credit hours). Addressing these declines will require a school wide commitment and will be our focus in the months ahead.
I wish to announce that Dr. Beverlye Brown has agreed to stay on with us through the summer, assisting ELPF with student advising in the higher education program, responding to student and professional organization inquiries, planning and facilitating Advisory Board meetings, and facilitating informal meetings for recruitment purposes. Please also help me welcome LaDonna McCullough as ELPF’s new GRA for the summer. She is pursuing her M.A. in Higher Education.
And, a brief mention that as a result of the Whole foods market development scheduled for 51st and Oak Streets, the Kansas City Young Matrons building (currently across from the Administrative Center) is scheduled to be relocated to the SOE student parking lot on August 16th. Work in advance of this move will commence later this month; more details will be shared after SOE and other university unit representatives and Campus Facilities have a chance to meet.
Enjoy your week.
