UMKC’s official summer census date was Friday, June 19th, and I am discouraged to report that, despite initial reports that the SOE’s summer enrollment was fairly steady, we have 616 students enrolled, a 14.086% drop from last summer. Our undergraduate enrollment of 137 represents nearly a 28% decline from last year while our 479 graduate students represent more than a 9% decrease. Meanwhile, SOE student credit hours—at 3,176—are down 14.532%, with our undergraduate credit hours down more than 40% since last summer. The SOE is one of two academic units across campus with double digit decreases in enrollment and one of four units experiencing double digit decreases in student credit hours, although the university overall is posting slight increases in both headcount and student credit hours. Starting in the fall, Assistant Dean Christine Timmerman and I will be meeting with each division to carefully examine ways we can reverse our headcount and credit hour declines.  All faculty and staff are invited to share their input with me, Chris Timmerman or their division chair in the next few months as our approach will need to be thoughtful, comprehensive and collaborative.

As mentioned last week, the Culture and Climate team is again hosting our summer Backpack Drive, with a goal of filling 24 backpacks with school supplies for primary grade students who are in foster care. School supplies (as specifically noted in the email sent on June 16th) or cash donations are welcome in the Student Services Office through July. The first floor bulletin board across from the elevator provides regular updates on our progress and you will see that your contributions are still needed.

New Student Convocation 2015 is scheduled for Sunday, August 23rd—the day before fall classes begin—with robing beginning at 12:30 in the Atterbury Student Success Center, room 238.  Convocation introduces new students into academia and their journey towards graduation; it will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Swinney Recreation Center and be completed by 2:00 p.m.  Our students will adjourn to the SOE’s 129/Learning Commons at the conclusion of Convocation for information about the SOE, our student organizations and SOE resources.  I encourage our faculty to formally welcome our incoming freshmen and transfer students to UMKC by participating; please let Ms. Christine Timmerman know if you are able to do so.  The deadline for ordering regalia (also through Chris Timmerman) is Friday, July 10th.

And, I want to wish everyone an enjoyable and energizing July 4th weekend. Safe travels to those of you who may be traveling to visit family or friends.
