With this my inaugural issue of enews as the new dean of the School of Education, I want to express my thanks to all faculty and staff who have already made me feel welcome and for sharing their experiences and knowledge with me so we can collectively advance our mission. I look forward in the coming weeks to meeting those of you whom I have not yet met so far during the summer.
I was pleased to be able to join the SOE Writing Group’s spring semester celebration on July 17 for a potluck/pool party, graciously hosted by Dr. Uzziel Pecina and his family. Attending were Drs. Michelle Maher, Kindel Nash, Katya Strekalova-Hughes, Theresa Torres (from Latina Studies), Ms. Leah Panther and Ms. Dea Marx, including their respective friends and family. It was a wonderful opportunity to casually talk shop and further get to know colleagues. For those of you wishing to become involved in the Writing Group, please contact Kindel.
We are moving forward in seeking to fill our four one-year instructor positions and will hold candidate interviews on July 26, for the three positions in TE&CS. Likewise, we will be hosting candidates on campus this week for the full-time instructor in our Higher Education Administration program.
My congratulations to Dr. Michelle Maher who will serve as the external evaluator for a recently awarded National Science Foundation grant, funded through the Directorate for Education & Human Resources, Division of Graduate Education. During this three-year project, Michelle will evaluate innovative doctoral education practices undertaken in the University of Oklahoma’s (OU) Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. These practices are intended to decrease degree acquisition time, reduce attrition, and support the goal of increasing scientific workforce diversity. The grant PI is Dr. Michael Ashby of OU, and project updates will be posted at https://chemgraded.com/.
As some of you have heard, the SOE’s three UMKC FY17 strategic funding proposals [for an on-line graduate certificate in Instructional Technology, SOE website redesign and development, and (with the School of Computing and Engineering) the development of the MyCPE Enterprise Resource Planning System for operational efficiencies] were not funded. I will be having conversations with the Provost in the near future so that we can explore other ways to advance these projects forward, and I welcome your input.
Summer camp at the SOE for fifth and sixth graders from the Hickman Mills C-1 School District culminated last Friday. My congratulations to Ms. Leah Panther for so ably coordinating and managing the week-long camp, and to the “sharks,” including our own Drs. LaVerne Berkel and Chris Brown.
