The campus wide Dean’s Council met on June 29th where one extended topic of discussion centered around the perceived need to create more consistency in units’ graduation ceremonies, particularly for the benefit of UMKC’s top administrators who attend multiple ceremonies. I anticipate future communication regarding what this uniformity may look like as well as some specific hooding guidelines (for both faculty and students) so that the ceremonies rightly honor our graduates’ accomplishments.
On July 9th, Ms. Christine Timmerman and I will be attending a full day campus wide enrollment and retention retreat hosted by the Chancellor as we collectively look to build our student enrollment to 20,000 by the year 2020. Provost Bichelmeyer, whose official start date with the university is mid-September, also is expected to attend. I anticipate a lively and informative meeting and will report on takeaways before the start of the fall semester.
If you will be participating in New Student Convocation on Sunday, August 23rd, please remember that the deadline for ordering regalia (through Chris Timmerman) is this Friday, July 10th. Robing will begin at 12:30 in the Atterbury Student Success Center, room 238. The ceremony will be at Swinney Recreation Center from 1-2 p.m.
A reminder that you have through July to yet participate in the Culture and Climate team’s Backpack Drive. Progress is tracked on the first floor bulletin board across from the elevator and we are certainly gaining ground. Thank you to those of you, including our RPDC colleagues, who already have dropped off supplies or cash donations with Student Services.
Finally, we will take a short break from enews and resume in August. Enjoy your summer!
