Welcome back to what I hope will be the start of another very productive and impactful academic year!

On August 5, I was happy to present the welcome for the UMKC Charter School Center convocation in Blue Springs.  Kudos to Dr. Phyllis Chase and Mr. Richard Wells for delivering a well-executed and thought-provoking event, and my thanks to Ms. Kristin Reese who attended to promote our Continuing and Professional Education office.  Read more online.  Likewise, Liberty Public Schools held its annual convocation on August 12—attended by more than 700—where Ms. Jessica Gomes and Ms. Kristin Reese represented the SOE among more than 100 vendors.

Know that our first faculty meeting of the semester will be Friday, September 16, from 10-12 in room 307, and I am excited by the opportunity for further collaboration and the work ahead of us. Immediately following, all faculty and staff are invited to join us for a welcome back lunch at Grand Street Café from 12:30-2 p.m.  Please RSVP by September 14.

I know you will join with me in congratulation Dr. Donna Davis who, upon recommendation of the Provost, has been promoted to Professor in the Educational Leadership, Policy and Foundations division, effective September 1.  Dr. Davis joined the SOE as an associate professor in 1999 and currently serves as coordinator of the Foundations of Education program.  She holds her Ph.D. from KU.

And, I am pleased to announce that Ms. Hilary McNeil and Ms. Rhianna Thomas will join TE&CS on September 1 as one-year instructors in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education, respectively.  Ms. McNeil is now pursuing her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from TE&CS and holds her M.Ed. in ESOL from Mid-America Nazarene University and an M.A. in Elementary Language Arts from Western Illinois University.  Ms. Thomas is pursuing her IPh.D. within the SOE and holds an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Early Childhood Education from UMKC.  Additionally, please help me welcome Dr. Melissa Patterson-Hazley who will be a one-year instructor in Higher Education Administration for ELPF.  Earning her Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Dr. Patterson-Hazley holds her M.A. from the SOE.  We look forward to the strengths each of these individuals bring to the School and the additional opportunities for collaboration.
