Welcome to the start of another academic semester—with a special shout-out to our new faculty: Dr. Michelle Maher, Dr. Ekatarina Strekalova-Hughes and instructor: Ms. Leah Panther. I look forward to another successful year and commend all our faculty and staff for their dedication to our students and their academic journeys. Please let me know if I may be of any specific assistance to you in the months ahead.

On August 18th we held another successful adjunct orientation, attended by nearly 20 adjuncts as well as our Chairs, Dr. LaVerne Berkel, Ms. Carol Sargent, Ms. Gail Metcalf-Schartel and me. We presented information on plagiarism, the adjunct faculty handbook and Student Services, and I thank those who attended and are among those committed to helping us meet our educational demands and requirements for all students.

Twenty-six new SOE students participated in the UMKC Convocation yesterday which included a formal ceremony at Swinney Rec Center followed by breakout sessions in each academic unit.  Ms. Christine Timmerman, Mr. Brad Martens and Ms. Gina Sanders shared information about the new SOE Learning Commons, academic advising and resources in the SOE.  Student Government representatives Caitlyn Dunsford, Nanell McAlpin and Lauren Anderson promoted SOE Student Government and did a drawing of SOE-related prizes.  And, faculty members Drs. Connor Warner, Julia Atiles and Jennifer Waddell did an interactive activity with the students on community building and grouped the students by academic program for Q&As. My thanks to everyone who made this a very successful welcome to our new freshmen and transfer students!

As many of you know, Assistant Dean Christine Timmerman has relocated her office to room 129C in the new Learning Commons Space to be closer to the Student Services team and our students. Her phone number (x1473) remains the same.

A reminder that Provost Barbara Bichelmeyer will be visiting with all SOE faculty and staff on Wednesday, September 2nd, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in room 307 to discuss the results of the surveys that many of you completed regarding our search for a new dean and our steps moving forward in finding a permanent dean. I encourage you to attend this important meeting as your schedule allows.

And, it is with regret that I announce that Ms. Rachael Steele has accepted the position of Director of Major Gifts with the School of Computing and Engineering, beginning September 28th. Rachael joined us as SOE’s Director of Major Gifts in January 2010 and committed herself to our mission and the cultivation of our donors. Her collaborations with faculty, community members, donors and others have netted us some of the largest gifts the School has ever enjoyed and I will miss her proactive approach, insights and guidance. Her last day in the office will be Tuesday, September 22nd; please stop by and extend your congratulations to her for this new chapter in her career.

As mentioned previously, a retirement reception for Ms. Gail Metcalf-Schartel will be Friday, September 25th, from 2:30-4 p.m. in the Plaza Room at the Administrative Center. Please join us to thank Gail for her years of hard work and commitment.

Finally, the Kansas City Young Matrons move is still expected to occur in late August or early September. We will be losing 62 spaces in our student parking lot to the west so parking will no doubt be at a premium now that classes have resumed.

Again, welcome (back) and have a good first week!
