Students are back and the semester officially begins!  I look forward to working with each and every one of you this year in strengthening the School and preparing our students for their chosen careers.

I was pleased to have participated in the August 11th meeting of the SOE Staff Association where I shared my thoughts about the current and future state of the SOE and continued to listen and learn from staff.  Since my appointment was announced in April, I have enjoyed meeting with many SOE faculty and staff.  This semester I look forward to getting to know students, alumni, external partners and donors as I continuing my listening tour across campus and in the community.

On August 21st we had the pleasure of welcoming our new incoming class of SOE freshmen and transfer students in the Learning Commons.  I was joined by Ms. Christine Timmerman, Dr. Uzziel Pecina and Dr. Clare Bell in providing an orientation and engaging in some ice-breakers.  These new students are part of the 1,040 transfer students and 1,151 freshmen at UMKC who participated in Convocation, marking the official beginning of the academic year.

And, finally, I know you will help me welcome Dr. Nora Peterman as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Language and Literacy who starts September 1.  She holds her Ph.D. and M.S.Ed. from the University of Pennsylvania.  Her research interests include adolescent literacy; children’s and adolescent literature; new, critical, and sociocultural literacies; urban education; digital literacies; multicultural education; and literacy assessment.  Stop by TE&CS and visit her in suite 312.
