Last week Wednesday, Drs. Rita Barger, Michele Foster and I joined in the afternoon celebration for the university’s 23 faculty and librarians who received promotions and tenure, effective September 1st. Among them were our own Dr. Clare Bell and Dr. Jennifer Waddell, both of whom are now Associate Professors with Tenure. Provost Gail Hackett and Chancellor Leo Morton opened and closed the ceremony, respectively. The recognition event was a fitting tribute to the thoughtful work of all those involved, and I extend my heartiest congratulations to Drs. Bell and Waddell on this well-deserved honor.

On September 11th, we hosted another successful Scholar Donor Luncheon for approximately 120 individuals. The highlight of the program was the presentations by two students (Roger Rodriguez, B.A. candidate in Elementary Education/IUE and Alexander Omorodion, iPh.D. candidate/CIL) and that of our alumni speaker, Janita Butler Webb (M.A. ’14, B.A. ’09), now a Teacher Leader at Noble Prentis Elementary School. My thanks to the SOE scholarship committee (Ms. Sheryl Cochran, Dr. Donna Davis, Dr. Michele Foster, Dr. Gus Jacob, Dr. Kimberly Langrehr, Ms. Dea Marx, Ms. Gina Sanders, Mr. Ernie Stufflebean, Ms. Christine Timmerman and Dr. Jennifer Waddell), and others from University Advancement and the SOE who worked tirelessly behind the scenes and on-site to pull off a flawless event. Special thanks to Ms. Rachael Steele whose relationships with our donors and overall management of details large and small resulted in an enjoyable and successful afternoon. Pictures will be shared when they become available.

This past weekend, I am pleased to report that UMKC sponsored a booth at Fiesta Kansas City, and our own Dr. Uzziel Pecina volunteered to staff it for several hours on behalf of the SOE. This year’s 15th annual Fiesta was sponsored by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City and featured food, entertainment and a host of vendor booths.

This year’s Welcome Back Picnic for all faculty and staff will be this Friday, September 19th from noon – 1:30 p.m. on the SOE patio. Please RSVP (password: picnic) if you have not yet done so! Catered by Backyard Burgers, hot dogs, chicken, burgers, brats and veggie burgers with all the fixings will be available. Friday’s forecast currently calls for 78 degrees—perfect picnic weather!

A reminder that UMKC’s second annual 5K Regalia Run will be held September 28th during Founder’s Week and this year the SOE has its own team (Team A+)! Join fellow faculty/staff, students and alums for a morning of fun; proceeds from the run will support student scholarships across campus. Register to participate before next Friday, September 26th.

The faculty retreat will be October 10th from 8 a.m.–1 p.m. in the Plaza, Hyde Park and Brookside Rooms in the Administrative Center and I hope to see you there!  Our focus will be assessment and accreditation as we take further steps to ensure that our programs meet the new CAEP standards.  Please RSVP (password: retreat) as lunch will be provided.

Have a wonderful week.
