As anticipated, the University released its official Comprehensive Enrollment Report for Fall 2016 last week. UMKC’s total enrollment is 16,944 students, which is an increase of 1.47% from Fall 2015, with students taking 177,785 credit hours, an increase of .9% from last fall. For the School of Education, we have 744 students (310 undergraduates and 434 graduates) taking 5,577 credit hours for a 23.14% drop in overall enrollment and 22.98% reduction in student credit hours compared to a year ago. The SOE and School of Law are the only two academic units where enrollment is down by double digits. This year’s census date numbers are cause for concern as we have experienced declining enrollment for the last six years. Our work this year at all levels will be crucial in recruiting and retaining more students.
I was pleased to participate in the official open house for our redesigned Learning Commons on September 21, and it was good to see so many students and faculty/staff in attendance. After a brief formal program, we had the opportunity for casual conversation and sweet treats, and three students were the proud raffle recipients of SOE-branded goodie bags. Our collective thanks, again, of course, to our alumni donors who made the re-envisioned space a reality, and those who worked tirelessly internally to help get the job done: Dr. Chris Brown, Ms. Christine Timmerman, Ms. Jackie Walter, and Ms. Carol Sargent. By now you should have received your Total Rewards Guide (at your home address) which will assist you in choosing benefits for 2017, although a digital guide and other decision-making tools are also available online. The enrollment window for active faculty and staff is October 17-28; further information will be forthcoming.
And, for those of you planning to attend the AACTE meeting in Tampa in March, know that discounted registration rates are available through October 19.
