KC-TEACH is an innovative collaborative project involving the University of
Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) College of Arts and Sciences, Schools of Education
and Biological Sciences, and the Kansas City, Missouri School District (KCMSD),
which seeks to increase the number of high school science teachers in the KCMSD.
KC-TEACH will provide two Robert Noyce scholarship options. Option 1 is designed
for undergraduate students who have 2-3 years to complete both their
undergraduate degree and science certification requirements, which obligates the
recipients to 4-6 years of teacher service in a high-need district. Option 2 is
a recent science bachelors recipient /second-career program, enabling
participants to complete high school science certification in one year and then
obligating them to 2 years of teacher service in a high-need district.
Project Goals
1. Prepare 28 high quality science teachers in biology, chemistry, earth science
or physics over five years by:
a. Equipping candidates to provide high-quality science instruction and
b. Placing them in a high-need urban high school.
2. To achieve Goal 1, attract a diverse, high-quality pool of KC-TEACH Noyce
Scholarship applicants by:
a. Providing freshman and sophomore internships funded by UMKC;
b. Targeting students in biology, chemistry, earth science, and physics who are
interested in achieving high school science certification; and
c. Establishing a pipeline of potential KC-TEACH Noyce Scholarship applicants
among science professionals seeking a second career.
3. Support KC-TEACH program completers in their first three years of teaching,
improving their retention beyond the service commitment that the Noyce
Scholarship requires through:
a. Careful first-year placement and mentor selection and
b. New teacher orientation, classroom management support, and socialization into
the teaching profession.
