Description

The Master of Arts in Reading Education focuses on developing highly competent literacy providers at the elementary, middle school, high school, college, or adult levels. Students in this program learn to:

  • assess and improve literacy abilities in various classroom settings
  • diagnose and treat sub-optimal to severely disabled readers
  • recognize and apply a wide variety of research-based literacy development techniques and strategies.

Curriculum

This 36-hour degree program allows certified teachers to obtain State certification as a Special Reading Teacher.  Students obtain hands-on, supervised practicum experiences in both parent/student settings and in a classroom of one of our nine partner school districts, with emphasis on teaching within urban or diverse settings.  Students must pass a final examination (administered each F/Sp/Su semester) no later than the semester prior to the final semester, or the one in which s/he intends to graduate.
