Urban Leadership and Policy Studies in Education (ULAPSIE)Description
The overall mission of the Higher Education Administration program is to prepare individuals for leadership positions in higher education institutions.
The program will provide opportunities for students to gain knowledge, skills, and competencies essential to their career and professional development as leaders in higher education settings and related fields. Components of the program are designed to provide students with 1) a broad understanding of the meaning and scope of higher education; 2) an understanding of the professional nature of higher education; 3) competence as agents of social change in the higher education setting; 4) the acquisition of critical communication skills; 5) knowledge of research methods and design; and 6) opportunities for practical experience in the field.
Major Learning Objectives (Outcomes):
- Have a thorough grounding of higher education/student affairs as a field of study
- Understand organizational, management, leadership and supervision theories and issues
- Understand developmental theories as they relate to college students
- Understand professional requirements and ethics of the field
- Develop self-awareness
- Develop multicultural competencies

- Develop skills to use technology to enhance the educational experience
- Develop the ability to analyze and interpret current research in the field
- Increase skills to apply research
- Improve ability to integrate and synthesize information
Curriculum
The curriculum reflects consideration of the current issues and needs of society, of higher education, and of the student populations served by colleges and universities. Developed with the assistance of current students and graduates of the program, it is consistent with recommendations of local, state, regional, and national legislative bodies and professional groups concerned with graduate education.
Admissions Requirements
- Undergraduate Grade Point Average of at least 3.0
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE): quantitative, verbal and analytical writing. Although there is no predetermined qualifying score, the GRE results will be used as one of many factors in determining student’s acceptance into the program.

Submit complete UMKC graduate school application to the UMKC Office of Admissions with the following:

Official transcripts from all colleges attended

Submit to Urban Leadership and Policy Studies in Education Office a Higher Education packet cover sheet (appendix C of Handbook) with below items:

Two professional or academic letters of reference with recommendation form (appendix D of Handbook)

500-word Written Statement of Purpose outlining student's rationale for application to the program and learning goals
