Educational Specialist in Educational Administration (P-12)
Urban Leadership and Policy Studies in Education (ULAPSIE)Description
The Ed.S. degree with emphasis in educational administration prepares teachers for specialization in school leadership and administration. The program also provides an opportunity for practicing administrators to enhance their professional skills and to connect with other practitioners from the metropolitan area and region. Students in the program gain a broad understanding across the professional field, the acquisition of in-depth knowledge in at least one specialized field in educational administration, and integrative experiences demonstrating the application of theory to practice.
The program of study will align with the candidate's professional goals. Although not essential to the completion of the degree, the Master of Arts may be earned approximately halfway into the program.
Admission Requirements
- Possess a bachelor's or master's degree
- Must hold compatible teaching license/certificate if seeking administrative certification (i.e. to be an elementary principal one must be an elementary teacher)
- At least two years of certified teaching experience
Application Procedures
- Complete UMKC graduate application
- Submit the following to the Urban Leadership and Policy Studies in Education Office:
- Statement of purpose regarding past, present and future career goals (500 words or less)
- Three professional or academic letters of recommendation
- Copy of teaching license/certificate
- Resume showing at least two years of certified teaching experience
Eligibility Requirements
For Advanced Principalship
Advanced principalship certification enables an individual to serve as a building administrator, principal, or district administrator. A candidate must:
- Hold a permanent or professional elementary, secondary, middle school, or K-12 subject area teaching certificate
- Have completed at least two years of approved teaching experience at the appropriate level
- Have completed a course in psychology/education of the exceptional child (EDSP 407 or TE 404)
- Have completed a Master’s degree in educational administration or a related field
For Superintendency
Superintendency certification enables an individual to serve as a school superintendent. A candidate must:
- Hold a permanent/professional teaching certificate
- Have four years of teaching, supervisory, or administrative experience, or any combination thereof, in elementary, middle, or secondary schools
- Have completed a course in psychology/education of the exceptional child
- Hold a Master’s degree in Educational Administration or related educational field
- Have completed the Educational Specialist degree in Educational Administration
