UMKC Provost names SOE interim dean

ChrisantChris Brownhia (Chris) Brown, Ph.D., has been selected to serve as interim dean of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Education.

Brown currently serves as chair of the Division of Counseling and Educational Psychology at the School of Education. She will begin her duties as interim dean Sept. 1, and will serve until a new permanent dean is appointed. Dean Wanda Blanchett will serve until July 31, when she leaves to take on her new post as distinguished professor and dean of the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers. LaVerne Berkel, Ph.D., current associate dean and associate professor, has been selected to serve as acting dean for the month of August.

Brown has been a member of the UMKC faculty for more than 20 years, joining in 1993 as an assistant professor of Counseling and Educational Psychology. In 2001, she was named coordinator of the Masters in Counseling and Guidance Program. She was promoted to full professor in 2008 and was appointed as the chair of the division in 2013.

She earned her B.S. in Psychology at UCLA; M.S. in Counseling from California State University at Long Beach; and her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from UMKC.

“Dr. Brown was named interim dean after input from faculty, staff and students from the SOE. In those conversations, she was praised for her strengths as a teacher, scholar and administrator,” said Gail Hackett, Ph.D., Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. “I am confident that she will provide excellent leadership for the SOE during our search process.”

The process of forming a search committee for a permanent dean is underway, and a national search firm will be brought in to assist in the process. The search is expected to begin in August.
