Welcome to the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s (UMKC) nationally-accredited School of Education! Offering undergraduate, post-bachelors, master’s, educational specialist and doctoral programs, our mission is to recruit, prepare and support outstanding teachers, mental health professionals, and administrators who will create lifelong opportunities for America’s diverse urban communities. Founded in 1954, the same year as the Brown v. Topeka Board of Education decision, we are committed to core values of equity, inclusion and social justice, and to achieving the unfulfilled promise of that historic decision. With nearly 16,000 alumni living and working to make a difference worldwide, our reach is vast. Learn here. Serve anywhere.
The School of Education is organized into three academic divisions: Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies; Educational Leadership, Policy and Foundations; and Counseling and Educational Psychology. Our teacher education programs ensure that students are well-prepared to meet the standards required by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) granted the School national accreditation at the initial-licensure level for meeting rigorous professional standards of excellence in teacher preparation. Our master’s programs in counseling and guidance and our doctoral program in counseling psychology are also nationally recognized, accredited by the Masters in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC) and the American Psychological Association (APA).
Along with state-of-the-art learning experiences provided to our teacher candidates and future mental health professionals, we further provide exceptional graduate degree programs that prepare teacher leaders, administrators, school counselors, youth service providers and students from other disciplines to work across a variety of PK-12 and higher education settings. To promote strong partnerships with local schools, agencies and a broad range of constituents across the region, the School is also comprised of cutting-edge centers and institutes.
As you learn about the School of Education, I encourage you to explore our website, contact us for more information or schedule a campus visit. I am proud to serve as the dean of a school which plays such a vital role in advancing the mission of UMKC. I invite you to join us in realizing our vision of being a leading urban-serving school of education in the nation. Our remarkable community of faculty and staff are dedicated to the greater purpose of the School and, as a result, to the futures of the people you will inspire, teach, serve and help throughout your career.
